Understanding Mahr

Mahr (also written Mehr) is an obligatory gift from the groom to the bride, mentioned in the Qur'an and Sunnah. It belongs solely to the bride and is a mark of honour and commitment, not a "price".

Prompt (Muajjal) vs Deferred (Muwajjal): Mahr can be paid immediately at the time of nikah (prompt) or agreed to be paid later (deferred), or split between the two. This should be clearly agreed and documented in the nikah contract.

There is no maximum for mahr, and Islam encourages keeping it reasonable and not burdensome. The goal is a respectful, mutually-agreed arrangement that honours the bride's right.
